Virgin Media Ireland has reached a long-term agreement with Flogas Enterprise that will introduce a 100 percent renewal energy supply across its operations in Ireland, powering Virgin Media’s main offices, contact centre, TV studios, data centres and regional transmission sites across Ireland.
“Across Virgin Media, we’re looking at where our energy comes from and whether there’s a greener alternative” said Peter McCarthy, VP of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Virgin Media. “We know energy is one of our biggest areas of opportunity and our continuous aim is to achieve more sustainable solutions towards reducing our carbon footprint. Technology and innovation are at the core of everything Virgin Media does and this partnership is another example of working with a market leading business energy suppliers to support environmental sustainability and climate action throughout our operations. Our 100 percent renewables goal, while long-term and aspirational, reflects our determination to do our part in Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future, and reinforces our commitment to take action across our operations”.
Barry Murphy, Commercial Director of Naturgy Ireland, added that the company has developed a tailored solution that meets Virgin Media’s specific requirements and that Naturgy was the first supplier in Ireland to achieve a 100 percent green electricity rating for customers back in 2012, and the first shipper in Ireland to supply renewable gas to customers in Ireland during 2020. Naturgy sources its renewable green electricity by purchasing it from renewable generators, across a range of technologies on the island of Ireland.
Naturgy will be presenting Virgin Media with their Certificate of using 100 percent renewable energy today, enabling Virgin Media to save the equivalent of 58,560 trees by eliminating Scope 2 emissions of 2,374.91 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide CO2 equivalent) in 2019.
Virgin Media is engaged in building a more environmentally sustainable company, from improving the fuel efficiency of vans in its fleet, to designing energy-efficient products for use in customers’ homes. To get there, the company is focusing on sustainable innovation in areas of Energy and Emissions, Products and Experiences.
