Flogas has announced plans to deliver €50 million worth of solar energy projects over the next five years to large Irish businesses through its new Solar as a Service offering.

The Solar as a Service (SaaS) offering will enable Irish businesses to harness the power of rooftop and ground mounted Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels on their premises without any capital investment, significantly reducing their energy bills and carbon footprints.

This initiative is part of Flogas’ parent company, DCC plc’s “Cleaner Energy in Your Power” strategy, which focuses on expanding its renewable energy business. The strategy aims to reduce customer carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and supports DCC’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices across Europe, in alignment with the EU’s Green Deal target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Flogas is partnering with Alternative Energy Ireland (AEI) and Wewise, both sister companies within the DCC group, to deliver a comprehensive solar solution for the Irish market.

AEI will manage the installation and ongoing management of the solar PV installations, ensuring they achieve 90% of their expected energy output annually, with the added benefit of real-time monitoring. Wewise, will provide tailored financing arrangements, making on-site solar energy accessible to large businesses without upfront costs.

“This investment is central to Flogas’ strategy to lead in renewable energy and sustainability across Ireland”, said Barry Murphy, Energy Services and Renewables Director, Flogas. “It supports our vision of becoming a green energy leader by driving the adoption of Solar as a Service among large businesses, ultimately reducing carbon emissions and energy costs while contributing to Ireland’s climate goals.”

Flogas aims to install around 50 megawatts (MW) of solar PV capacity across approximately 100 large businesses. This move is expected to generate about 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy annually—enough to power approximately 12,000 Irish homes each year.

The initiative is projected to significantly reduce Irish carbon emissions, with an estimated reduction of 11,000 tonnes annually — supporting Ireland’s renewable energy targets and furthering the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

“Solar as a Service offers numerous benefits, including zero upfront costs, significant energy savings, reduction in carbon footprints, a single monthly fee, and a service level agreement for the duration of any contract”, said Steven Bray, Managing Director, Alternative Energy Ireland. “This model enables businesses to leverage solar energy without the financial burden of purchasing and maintaining the technology.”

The focus on large businesses aligns with the national goal of decarbonising the Irish commercial sector, crucial for meeting the overall reduction in emission targets for 2030 and 2050.

The solar energy market in Ireland is in its early stages of development. At the end of 2023, Ireland had 700 MW of solar PV installed capacity, with electricity generation from solar PV accounting for only 1.9% of Ireland’s electricity supply.

Irish Government policies such as the Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) provide incentives to boost adoption, but uptake remains constrained – particularly in the commercial sector – by barriers of high initial costs and limited access to capital for upfront investments in renewable energy infrastructure.

Flogas aims to address these barriers, accelerate solar adoption, and support Ireland’s ambitious energy sustainability targets, including generating 80% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030,” added Murphy. “We also hope this project will contribute to Ireland achieving a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 relative to 2018 levels, as outlined in the government’s Climate Action Plan.”

This service is particularly suitable for large energy users requiring systems of over 150 kW. Suitable roof or land space on site will be required and reviewed during detailed site survey phase in project.

  • Vodafone first telco to sign Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) in Ireland with investment of over €6 million in Irish renewable energy
  • This is a joint CPPA with Vantage Towers, a leading European tower infrastructure operator
  • Vodafone Ireland has signed a new Corporate Power Purchasing Agreement (CPPA) with energy supplier Flogas, along with its infrastructure partner Vantage Towers.

This agreement allows Vodafone to directly purchase renewable electricity from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm located in Mayo. Vodafone is the first telco in Ireland to sign a CPPA.

The investment of €6million is part of the company’s sustainability goals to achieve net zero across its full value chain by 2040. Combined with other agreements Vodafone has in place, 100% of its Irish operations are matched with certificates of renewable energy sources in Ireland.

The energy secured within this agreement gives Vodafone access to clean, high quality and affordable renewable electricity for its extensive network of cables that deliver mobile and fixed services to customers across Ireland. As part of this agreement, the company’s infrastructure partners, Vantage Towers will also receive renewable energy from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm.

Amanda Nelson, CEO at Vodafone Ireland said: “We are proud of the steps we’re taking to not only support our customers to be greener but also green our own operations. Today’s announcement is an investment in Ireland and its renewable energy industry. This is a significant step towards our own ambitious net zero targets.’’

Brian McHugh, Managing Director at Vantage Towers Ireland said: “Vantage Towers’ infrastructure network is totally powered by renewable energy, in line with our global ESG agenda. Sustainability is a necessity, and this agreement with Flogas is a further commitment to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment, and a continued investment in Ireland’s natural generating capability.’’

Pat Brett, Director at Derrynadivva Wind Farm Ltd said: “We are thrilled that Derrynadivva Wind Farm in Co Mayo continues to play a pivotal role in Ireland’s transition to a sustainable energy future. By delivering clean, renewable wind energy to some of the nation’s largest companies, we are not only helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also supporting these businesses in their commitment to more efficient and responsible energy consumption.”

James Temple, Renewables Manager at Flogas, said: “The CPPA with Vodafone Ireland underscores the accelerating commitment of Irish companies to increase their use of carbon-free energy and lead in renewable energy adoption. As a leading provider of clean energy CPPAs, Flogas is dedicated to enhancing the economic feasibility of renewable projects and advancing Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Vodafone’s sustainability strategy also focuses on reducing its energy consumption. In Ireland, the company uses an Intelligent Energy Management System. This is a system in which a machine learning algorithm across the 4G network analyses traffic patterns in real-time, allowing Vodafone reduce congestion and ultimately reduce energy consumption by 10 to 15%.

Vodafone Ireland also provides ways for customers be more sustainable including ‘Fix & Go’ for repairs and upgrades to extend the lifecycle of phones, as well as eSIMs which reduce carbon emissions by removing the need to manufacture and ship plastic, and a variety of eco accessories.

In 2022, Vodafone became the first telco in Ireland to offer a device trade-in service which has been very well received by customers, with over 35,000 devices returned to Vodafone to date. The initiative offers customers up to €400 for old smartphone devices which customers can use as store credit towards the purchase of a new device or receive payment directly into their bank account. After the device is traded in Vodafone ensures each device is refurbed, recycled or repurposed, as part of our commitment to a circular economy.

  • Flogas, a DCC business, officially opens the Republic of Ireland’s first ever dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station in North Co. Dublin.
  • Bio-CNG for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) cuts carbon emissions by up to 90%[1] and reduces lifetime vehicle costs compared to diesel.
  • The self-service station can refuel up to 50 HGVs per day, cutting over 9,000 tonnes of C02 emissions per annum compared to diesel fuelled HGVs.
  • The station will support large companies who want to make the switch to Bio-CNG and reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
  •  This is good news for businesses today who are looking to make the transition to more sustainable, cleaner fuel for their heavy goods vehicles. Flogas, part of DCC plc, is today announcing the official opening of the Republic of Ireland’s first ever dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station.

Flogas, a commercial and industrial energy supplier and supplier of renewable biomethane to transport in Ireland, said this new self-service station will support large companies who want to make the switch to Bio-CNG and reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

Located at FoodCentral in St Margarets North Co. Dublin, this 2,900 square metre site can refuel up to 50 HGVs per day from one dual sided high-speed dispenser. When the station is at full utilisation, it will cut over 9,000 tonnes of C02 emissions per annum compared to diesel fuelled HGVs.

The news comes after the Government recently published its new National Biomethane Strategy to support the delivery of up to 5.7 Tera Wat Hour (TWh) of indigenously produced biomethane by 2030. Bio-CNG will support the decarbonisation of Ireland’s road haulage sector, responsible for 20.7%[2] of the total road transport emissions in Ireland.

The renewable fuel for the station will come from Irish and European anaerobic digestion (AD) plants. Flogas is the only energy supplier in Ireland approved under the Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme for the supply of Bio-CNG. The Renewable Gas Certification scheme ensures transparency and accountability, as the biomethane will be meticulously tracked in the supply chain.  This dedicated Bio-CNG station is another renewable market first for Flogas having already been the first energy supplier in Ireland to supply biomethane through the gas network to Diageo in 2020.

As we stand at the forefront of Ireland’s sustainable energy revolution, Flogas is proud to unveil the Republic of Ireland’s first ever dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station,” said John Rooney, Managing Director at Flogas.Bio-CNG represents not just a fuel, but a promise—a promise of a greener, more efficient future for commercial transportation. Bio-CNG for heavy goods vehicles can cut carbon emissions by up to 90% and can reduce the lifetime vehicle costs compared to diesel vehicles, which is in line with DCC’s strategy – Cleaner Energy in Your Power.   We would encourage any business thinking of making the switch to Bio-CNG to get in touch with our dedicated team of energy experts at Flogas,” he added.

Speaking at the official opening, Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications Ossian Smyth TD, said: “Flogas’s Bio-CNG refuelling station will play a central role in supporting businesses who want to switch to cleaner, greener fuel and cut carbon emissions. There are approximately 40,000 HGVs in Ireland – the vast majority are diesel powered. But we also know 45% of HGVs on our roads right now are 10 years or older[3]. This presents a great opportunity, as we know more businesses who want to become more sustainable are replacing vehicles at the end of their life service with lower emission alternatives, such as Bio-CNG. By making the switch to Bio-CNG, we have the power to drastically reduce emissions in Ireland, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier future for all.”

Operated by Certa :  Certa currently operate a network of 49 pay@pump forecourts and 29 home heating depots, is a sister company to Flogas, this self-service station will offer convenient access to Bio-CNG 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will support companies with existing Bio-CNG HGV fleets and those looking to make the switch.

Flogas already supplies renewable biomethane to four Circle K refuelling pumps across Ireland. As experts in gas distribution, Flogas saw an opportunity to provide a well to wheel solution for the transport sector.

This is a new business division and Flogas plans to roll out more Bio-CNG stations with its industrial and commercial customers in the future, to support them with their Scope 3 emissions reduction plans.

The new Flogas Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station is supported by Gas Networks Ireland’s Causeway project, which has to date delivered a network of high capacity fast-fill CNG stations nationwide, developed a renewable gas injection facility, deployed a fleet of CNG vehicles and made a CNG vehicle fund available to businesses in Ireland.

    Demand showing strong growth

Gas Networks Ireland’s latest gas demand report shows that demand for renewable gas in transport from Ireland’s road freight sector is continuing to show strong growth – in May 2024, demand for this low carbon alternative to diesel saw another significant year-on-year increase, up 28% on the same month last year.

Gas Networks Ireland’s Head of Business Development, Karen Doyle said:

“We are delighted to support Flogas in the opening of the Republic of Ireland’s first dedicated BioCNG refuelling station, part of our Causeway Programme, which will play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions from the commercial transport sector. With three more public stations in development, we are delivering a network of stations offering a low carbon fuel alternative to diesel for Ireland’s commercial fleet”

If you are a large enterprise and would like to learn more about how you can switch your fleet to sustainable Bio-CNG, please call 01 884 9400 or email enterprise@flogas.ie

Key European Gas Themes in 2024

As Europe braces itself for another winter, reminiscent of the challenges faced last year, the continent is grappling with a unique set of circumstances that could shape the gas landscape in 2024. Despite an early cold snap in January, a departure from the aggressive price spikes of the previous year suggests a new normalcy. Here are some key themes that may define the European gas market in 2024:

EU Gas Hub Volatility: Volatility remains a constant companion in a dynamic economic landscape, often indicative of market uncertainties. In the aftermath of a substantial reduction in Russian gas flows, the global gas market has experienced a reorientation from East to West. While prices have moderated, instances like the Australian LNG strikes and the Israel-Gaza conflict emphasise that Europe is no longer ringfenced by Gazprom. In 2024, while prices may be lower, volatility is expected to persist, signalling the reality of a post-Russian gas era.

Ukraine Transit Agreement Expiration: The expiration of the Ukraine transit agreement adds a layer of complexity to Europe’s gas dynamics. The EU’s previous eleventh-hour gas deal between Ukraine and Russia feels like a recent memory, yet the prospects for a renewed agreement appear uncertain. Despite political pressures from certain EU member states to engage in negotiations with Russia’s Gazprom, Kyiv may choose not to extend the agreement. The current political situation makes it increasingly unlikely for the EU, Ukraine, and Russia to broker a new deal, raising questions about the future of Russian gas transit through Ukraine.

Structural Changes in Gas Flows: The structural changes in global gas flows, particularly the shift from East to West, continue to reshape energy markets. The reduction in Russian gas flows has prompted a diversification of gas sources for Europe. This structural transformation has contributed to the moderation of prices, but it also underscores the vulnerability of energy markets to geopolitical events. Market participants need to navigate the evolving landscape of gas supply and demand patterns, considering the impact of unforeseen global events on European energy security.

Record High Storage Fill and Subdued Demand: Contrary to the previous year, Europe is experiencing a retreat in gas prices despite an early cold snap and the anticipation of an extended heating season. Record high storage fill and subdued demand have played a role in mitigating price volatility. Market participants must closely monitor storage levels and demand patterns to gauge the resilience of the European gas market against external shocks.

2024 presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for participants in the European gas market. The departure from the reliance on Russian gas brings about a new era characterised by lower prices but sustained volatility. The expiration of the Ukraine transit agreement and ongoing geopolitical tensions further contribute to the uncertainty. Navigating this landscape requires a keen understanding of global gas flows, storage dynamics, and the geopolitical factors influencing European energy security.

Unleashing the Potential of BioCNG in Transportation

Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in Ireland primarily comes from burning fossil fuel for cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes. Ireland’s transportation sector stood as a significant contributor representing the second-largest source of GHG emissions in Ireland with over 11.6 million tonnes of GHGs emitted in 2022, accounting for 19.1% of total emissions.

In recent years, Ireland has begun to embrace sustainable solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its transportation sector.

One solution gaining traction is BioCNG (compressed Biomethane), often referred to as ‘renewable natural gas’ when used as a transportation fuel. This sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels like diesel has not only caught the attention of Ireland but also several other countries as a promising means to combat climate change.

Biomethane is noted for its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation. This alternative renewable fuel can power a variety of vehicles, from buses, trucks to HGVs, offering a clear path towards decarbonising the transport sector.

The sustainability of biomethane lies in its production process. It is often derived from organic waste sources, such as slurry, sludge, and food waste. These materials are transformed into biogas through a controlled process. This biogas, rich in methane, is then meticulously purified and upgraded to meet biomethane quality standards before serving its purpose as a renewable fuel. Biomethane not only reduces the methane emissions from agricultural waste but also repurposes it in an environmentally friendly way.

In Ireland, concerted efforts are underway to establish a network of BioCNG refuelling stations, with a particular focus on accommodating heavy-duty vehicles. BioCNG produced from biomethane is currently available for heavy goods vehicles (HGV) at Circle K’s forecourts in Ballysimon Road Limerick, Cashel, Clonshaugh and Dublin Port. The biomethane is considered to be a renewable fuel under the Irish Biofuel Obligation Scheme and can even have negative well-to-wheel emissions when it is produced from certain agricultural waste feedstocks. Gas Networks Ireland tracks the allocation of biomethane from the point of injection into the grid to the point of withdrawal at the Circle K refuelling stations. This infrastructure is making biomethane readily accessible, encouraging its adoption across Ireland.

Biomethane as a transport fuel not only addresses climate concerns but also contributes to improved air quality. Its combustion produces lower levels of pollutants compared to conventional fossil fuels, further enhancing the health and well-being of the Irish population. It showcases the circular economy to the highest standard by avoiding climate-harming methane emissions from agricultural waste, diversifying income sources for rural farmers, and reducing fossil fuel use in transport!

Public and private sector partnerships and investments are pivotal in advancing the adoption of biomethane further in transportation. Collaborations between government bodies, energy companies, and transport operators must persist and intensify to expedite the growth of this promising transitional fuel. By working together, Ireland can leverage the potential of biomethane to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible transportation landscape.

Flogas Enterprise and Bon Secours Health System Sign a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement – a first-of-its kind for an Irish Hospital Group

Ireland’s largest independent hospital group, Bon Secours Health System and energy supplier Flogas Enterprise have signed a new three year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA).

Bon Secours Health System is the first hospital group in Ireland to sign a CPPA which will allow the company to purchase renewable electricity directly from a wind farm in Co. Tipperary.

This new CPPA will ensure that the largest provider of private healthcare in Ireland, Bon Secours Health System, is powered by renewable electricity harnessed from wind energy in Tipperary and used across its six sites in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Tralee. The hospital group treats more than 300,000 patients annually.

This CPPA will meet 50% of the Bon Secours Health System’s annual electricity requirements and support its sustainability ambitions over the coming years to help reduce its carbon emissions.  Guarantees of Origin (GoOs) (an electronic document which provides proof that a given share or quantity of energy was produced from renewable sources) associated with the wind farm will be retired in Bon Secours Health System’s name to support its scope 2 emissions reporting.

A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement, commonly referred to as a CPPA, is an agreement where a company purchases electricity directly from a wind farm or solar farm. The demand for renewable CPPAs in Ireland is surging significantly, driven by the growing number of companies seeking to reduce their carbon footprint, attain budget predictability in an unstable energy market, and support their sustainability initiatives.

“Bon Secours Health System is committed to providing advanced medicine and exceptional care to our patients in a more sustainable way. This commitment is deeply rooted in our values. Aligned with our 2025 Strategic Plan, this partnership with Flogas Enterprise is a huge step towards our goal of reducing our carbon and climate impact and becoming a more sustainable healthcare organisation.” said Paul Foley, Chief Sustainability Officer, Bon Secours Health System.

“We have defined a CPPA structure that makes it incredibly easy for our customers, we act as energy facilitators between renewable generators and large companies who want to transition to more sustainable energy, and we take great pride in assisting Bon Secours Health System on their journey to becoming a more sustainable organisation” said Lauren Stewart, Customer Relationship Manager at Flogas Enterprise.

“For over 20 years, we’ve a proven track record in bringing innovative sustainable energy products first to the market. We were the first energy supplier on the market to make Corporate Power Purchase Agreements available to Irish businesses for fully traceable, 100% renewable electricity – moving beyond generic, certificates-backed tariffs. Hundreds of large organisations both public and private across Ireland have trusted us to assess their energy needs and find the right energy strategy for them. Our mission is to support Irish energy users to enter the renewable market and improve the traceability of renewable electricity procurement.  One day, we hope all large enterprises in Ireland will be powered with 100% sustainable energy.” She added.

The Government’s Climate Action Plan sets a target that 15% of electricity consumption should come from renewable electricity contracted under corporate power purchase agreements by 2030.

Part of DCC plc, Flogas Enterprise is a leading supplier in the market bringing CPPA options to customers and can offer expert advice and help to businesses who want to make the switch. To speak with one of their expert advisors, call 01 884 9400 or email ppa@flogasenterprise.ie

Harnessing the Power of Biogas and Biomethane from Food Waste

Every year, an astonishing amount of food is wasted globally, contributing to environmental problems and economic losses:

    • The United States discards a staggering 60.3 million tonnes of food annually
    • The European Union isn’t far behind with an estimated 59 million tonnes of wasted food
    • In Ireland approximately 800,000 tonnes of food waste is generated in Ireland each year

To combat this issue, jurisdictions worldwide are taking steps to ban organic materials from landfills and encourage their collection through green bin programmers.

Most EU member countries have already implemented food waste diversion plans, and by 2024, all members will be required to introduce separate collection programmes for green and kitchen wastes.

    Rising Biogas Facilities

European markets for food waste digestion including the United Kingdom with has 87 sites, Spain with 53 sites, Italy with 47 sites and Germany with 218 sites and in Ireland there are less than 20 Anaerobic Digestion plants with only two that are gas-to-grid producing biomethane, which is a more complex but more sustainable end point and the remaining 18 are only gas-to-power, they make biogas but then put it through a CHP for electricity. There are currently plans in place in Ireland to build 130 anaerobic digestion biomethane plants in rural Ireland by 2030.

In Ireland the EPA recently launched a new Food Waste Charter, calling on all businesses and State Agencies operating across the food supply chain in Ireland to sign up and commit to reducing food waste. Building on the success of the first charter – which launched in 2017 and focused on the grocery retail sector—this new, more ambitious Charter, expands the call to action to every organisation in Ireland’s food supply chain.

Businesses signing up to the Food Waste Charter voluntarily commit to measure their food waste, set targets and take action to reduce food waste, and to report annually on progress, With almost 800,000 tonnes of food waste generated in Ireland annually, meeting Ireland’s commitment to halve food waste by 2030 is very challenging,

The potential for harnessing biogas and biomethane from food waste is enormous, with a growing number of initiatives and projects aimed at reducing food waste and promoting sustainable energy production. As these efforts continue to expand globally, the biogas and biomethane market is expected to thrive, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly  future.
